The Bangkok skyline of high-rises and glass towers under a dusky sky

This route balances Bangkok’s temples and markets with a few days of island time, and comfortably fits under $500 including a domestic flight.

Day 1–2: Bangkok

Land in Bangkok and settle into a guesthouse in the Banglamphu area, walking distance from Khao San Road and the Grand Palace. Spend day two temple-hopping — Wat Pho and Wat Arun are both inexpensive to visit and photograph beautifully at golden hour.

Rough spend: $70 (2 nights guesthouse, meals, temple entry, tuk-tuk rides)

Day 3: Travel day

Take a budget flight or overnight bus south toward the islands. A flight to Krabi is often under $40 if booked a few weeks ahead and saves a full day of overland travel.

Rough spend: $45 (flight, airport transfers, meals)

Day 4–6: Krabi and Railay Beach

Base yourself in Ao Nang or take a longtail boat to Railay Beach, only accessible by water and ringed by limestone cliffs. Rent snorkeling gear, join a budget island-hopping boat tour, and eat at the beachfront food stalls rather than resort restaurants.

Rough spend: $210 (3 nights guesthouse, boat tour, meals, gear rental)

Day 7: Fly home or onward

Head back to Bangkok or fly directly onward from Krabi Airport, depending on your route home.

Rough spend: $55 (transfers, flight, final-day meals)

Total: roughly $380–450

That leaves a comfortable buffer under the $500 mark for souvenirs, an extra activity, or a nicer meal on your last night.

Tips for making this itinerary work

  • Book the Bangkok–Krabi flight at least two weeks out; last-minute fares climb quickly.
  • Stick to 3–4 star guesthouses over resorts — the quality gap is small, the price gap is not.
  • Eat one full meal a day at a local market or street stall; it’s often the best food of the trip, not just the cheapest.
