Philippines

More than 7,000 islands of white-sand beaches, limestone lagoons, and world-class diving — the Philippines is a tropical paradise that still rewards budget travelers.

The Philippines is all about island life: dramatic lagoons in Palawan, whale sharks in Cebu, and surf in Siargao, with some of the friendliest people in Asia.

Why it’s cheap

Dorms and basic fan rooms run $10–15, a local carinderia meal of rice and adobo is $2–3, and shared island-hopping tours in El Nido or Coron cost $25–40 including lunch.

Getting around

Island hopping takes planning. Cebu Pacific and AirAsia fares between islands can drop below $30 if you book ahead, while ferries are cheaper but slower. On land, jeepneys and tricycles cost pennies.

Where budget meets comfort

Siquijor, Bohol, and Port Barton are quieter and cheaper than El Nido or Boracay, with beachfront cottages for $20–30 a night.
